THE CONCEPTION OF LIBERAL EDUCATION IN THE PEDAGOGICAL HERITAGE OF MATTHEW ARNOLD

The article gives brief information about the English person of the nineteenth century, Matthew Arnold. The author represents conflict of views on the main orientation of education in England in indicated period. There is presented the view of English thinker on the role of science education and liberal education. According to the thinker’s position the liberal education should consist of the humanities and sciences. The article gives information about the conception of human nature of Matthew Arnold, which implies the existence of four spheres: social, intellectual, aesthetic and moral. According to the thinker the natural sciences are responsible only for the sphere of knowledge, while the humanities are responsible for the other three. The author presents the primary role of the humanities in education based on the conclusions of the English thinker. There is also represented the content of liberal education in the article, the basis of which according to Matthew Arnold should be the literature, which involves the study of the classics of ancient Greece and Rome.
