The article analyzes the place of the course of Economics in the educational program, the prevailing approaches to teach economics at school and assesses their effectiveness. Considering the purpose of teaching the author presents the point of view according to which the teaching of economics in schools should be focused on the development of students’ skills in the conduct of economic life, their understanding of the fundamentals of the market mechanism. On the basis of the experience gained in countries with developed market economies, we make conclusions that such kind of model of school economy causes low level of knowledge of workers in the small sector of the economy, which requires finding a new model of teaching students the basics of economics and business at all stages of schooling.
