The given paper presents an analysis of the definition of “trends”. An interpretation of the phenomenon of “development trends of the educating process in a general education institution” being considered as a direction of the educating policy, is provided. The policy is determined by historical, political, national, social and economic, cultural etc. factors and evaluates prospects of the educating process development in a general education institution. A classification of the development trends of the educating process in a general education institution is substantiated, including a division by features: an immensity (global, by country), development phases (arising, matured, terminating: disappearing and transferring regularities), a duration (short-term, long-term), a subject matter (concerning theoretical and practical aspects). For a full understanding of matter of the particular type of trends, some case studies of trends of the education system development are considered.
