This article explores reading in a foreign language as a written mediated type of communication. The nature of value-orientation activity is described briefly. The findings from our research illustrate how value-orientation activity functions in the classroom setting and the way it determines the type, character, direction and content of students’ foreign language communication. The abovementioned mediated communication fulfils an affective-communicative function and conveys emotive information, thus contributing to mastering of value-orientation activity and providing it with a subject-matter. The article considers ways of organizing and managing students’ learning with a view to facilitate their acquisition of foreign language communication and promote their development as subjects of value-orientation activity. The study results in identifying three groups of learning-communicative actions students should acquire as part of their reading process in order to ensure the success of value-orientation activity.
