The article provides an analysis of the problem on how to teach reading in a foreign language with an account to peculiarities of contemporary language exams, PISA international research results, Russian federal educational standard requirements. The author presents methods of active listening as a means to develop competent reading in a foreign language that presuppose a student’s ability to comprehend foreign texts of various contents and use this information in everyday life circumstances. The method of active listening includes listening to audiobooks excerpts while reading their printed version simultaneously. Grading of competent reading in a foreign language is suggested to be done on the basis of identification of skills corresponding to the levels of text comprehension.
