The article discusses the concept of essential civic competence and means of its formation in a modern school. It’s based on the synthesis of research in the given characteristic civic competence as one of the most important learning outcomes of civic education. Stressing a synthesizing nature of the competence, the article identifies the main means of forming civic competence of students in today’s schools: students’ mastering methods and techniques of research, the use of active and interactive methods of training and education, inclusion in the management of high school, involvement in volunteer activities. The main methods of work are the generalization and systematization of theoretical material. The article has a nature of scientific and practical advice, and may be interesting to high school teachers and headteachers.
