TEACHER’S ROLE IN THE LISTENING SKILLS DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY PREPARATORY DEPARTMENTS (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE COURSE «GEOGRAPHY»)

The article focuses on listening skills development of international students at university preparatory departments by general subject teacher. In this article, the authors show how the subject teacher can help students develop listening skills as well as professional competence, so that they can listen to and perceive lecture material while studying basic courses. The article deals with some peculiarities of the listening process (psychological, linguistic). The article considers the great role of the teacher’s own speech, his intonation pace, diction, using facial expressions and gestures. The authors suggest using texts from the course textbook to practice the material considering phonetic, lexical and grammatical aspects. In this article the authors present instructional techniques and sequence of activities that contribute to the listening skills development. The article deals with reading and speaking in a non-mother tongue language as one of the components of speaking skill. The article also contains exercises that help international learners perceive Russian speech.
