In terms of the functional approach to the theory of language teaching an analysis of component composition has been made, in the course of which three variants of illocutionary competence have been stated. The correlation between the discursive approaches in linguistics, particularly the speech act theory, and modern approaches in language teaching has been displayed. On the basis of the research made by O.V. Aleksandrova, A.O. Budarina, E.S. Kubriakova, A.P. Starkov, L. F. Bachman, M. A.K. Halliday, M. Celse-Murcia etc, two interchangeable notions of illocutionary competence were found, such as functional and actional competence. The functions of illocutionary, functional and actional competence were systematized and displayed with the help of three graphics. The perspectives of implementing the obtained theoretical knowledge in practice have been shown.
