The article highlights the current problems of continuous education. Discusses the relationship between formal, non-formal and informal education. Questions and suggests ways of solving actual problems in this area in the short and medium term. The need for thoughtful attitude to the process of improving the system of didactic principles. Examples of the use of positive domestic teaching experience, accumulated over many years with the implementation of the requirements of the competence approach in education. Discusses the problems and prospects of development of andragogy, taking into account the principle of dynamic balance in the education of adults. It suggests the difficulty of use of the concepts of «competence», «competency», describes the author’s understanding of the need for the use of the competence approach in education and used terms.
