DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ ETHNIC SELF-AWARENESS IN THE PROCESS OF TRAINING

Our society is constantly facing the challenges of developing a well-educated and competitive person. Thus, ethnic and cultural challenges come into the vanguard of scientists’ interests nowadays. The process of ethnic and cultural competence development and ethnic self-awareness of young people is worth paying attention to when dealing with this issue. This challenge can’t be dealt with unless certain actions are taken in order to improve the quality of education and modernize teaching methods. Tertiary education must implement learner-centered approach, take into account students’ needs, actively engage them in learning and acquaint then with local culture and values. For this purpose we developed the model of students’ ethnic self-awareness which involves three important aspects: educational, social-pedagogic and practical. The development of ethnic self-awareness of teachers-to-be is a complex and multi-level process aimed at development of personal qualities, including knowledge, and skills that allow to use the experience gained within the ethnic and cultural environment.
