TEACHING METHODOLOGY OF THE LAW OF GOD (FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF SIMBIRSK CHUVASH TEACHERS’ SCHOOL)

We study teaching methodology of the Law of God at the Simbirsk Chuvash teachers’ school (the main educational institution for the training of qualified teachers in the Chuvash Republic in the late XIX - early XX century). A unique method of teaching the «Law of God2, which was compiled on the basis of the experience of the Chuvash teachers practitioners is considered successfully used at school. The key elements of this methodology were identified, which at the I. Yakovlev’s school were called «methods». Even teaching catechism with the textbook by Metropolitan Filaret of Moscow, the teacher of the Law expounded catechetical truths for modern students using the Russian language. The main goal of teaching was meaningful understanding. Students were taught to argue catechetical truths most accessible to the interlocutor techniques. Teachers did everything possible to memorize the Scriptures quite conscious and meaningful. At the Simbirsk Chuvash teachers’ school at the lessons on the «Law of God» teachers used ways of additions and examples. For more meaningful and deeper understanding of students’ sense of the lesson, the teacher added the content of the lesson not only with examples of life, but also with information from various fields of theology and sacred history. In studying the catechism the teacher favored question-and-answer form most of all.
